SELENA GOMEZ BREAKS SAG-AFTRA STRIKE RULES WITH SINCE-DELETED INSTAGRAM POST

Yikes! Selena Gomez is facing backlash as her fans accuse her of violating SAG-AFTRA rules. It all started when she shared an Instagram video promoting her show, Only Murders in the Building.

Gomez had uploaded a short video from the set and tagged the show’s official account, along with the caption, “Missing and wanting @onlymurdershulu.”

Some of Gomez’s followers criticized her post calling it “tone deaf” and accused her of scabbing (crossing a picket line to work during a strike).

Although Gomez’s Instagram video and tag appeared to be an unintentional error, she deleted it from her page after approximately 15 hours. Before its removal, the post had already garnered over one million likes.

The “Single Again” singer/actress broke SAG-AFTRA rules by promoting her show and crossing the picket line. During the strike, SAG-AFTRA members are not permitted to promote their work on social media. Gomez promoted the series by tagging the official account for the Hulu show, which goes against the guidelines.

SAG-AFTRA’s negotiating committee is ready to resume negotiations to end the actors’ strike. However, they are disappointed that the AMPTP hasn’t shown a willingness to make necessary concessions for a resolution, similar to the recent WGA negotiations. They are now awaiting communication from Carol Lombardini, the president of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

Personally, I don’t believe Selena Gomez posted with any malicious intent. In February of 2023, the singer/actress told Grazia Magazine,

“I don’t have [social media] on my phone, so there’s no temptation. I suddenly had to learn how to be with myself.”

Gomez also confided that her assistant acts as a liaison for her social media communications, posting photos and videos so that the star no longer deals with the platforms directly. If this is the case, Gomez most likely didn’t post and may have not been aware.

Now, is Gomez a bit out of touch? Yes, absolutely. Understanding the gravity of what this strike means for the little people in the entertainment industry is something many do not understand.

The strike isn’t for the ‘Selenas’ of show biz it’s for the little guy who works 12- to 16-hour days on set and still needs a side job to break even.

It’s for the people in the background who have silently held the whole industry up on their shoulders while being exploited and diminished by billion-dollar studios, networks, and streamers.

The show must go on – but only if everyone is being compensated fairly.
