During Jason Wu’s show at NYFW (New York Fashion Week) for the Spring/Summer ’24 collection, a distinctive hairstyle caught the attention of fashion aficionados. Dubbed the ‘Shipwrecked Finger Waves,’ this wet look / mermaid-like aesthetic graced the runway, beautifully displayed by models Amelia Gray, Lulu Tenny, and Sui He.

The mastermind behind the Shipwrecked Finger Waves is none other than celebrity hair artist Jimmy Paul.

With over 30 years working as a hairstylist in fashion, Jimmy Paul has become one of the most recognized names in the hair industry. He has has worked across the globe with brands like Orbie, Bumble and Bumble, and Clinique, to name a few.

For Jason Wu’s SS’24 runway show, it only made sense that the iconic Jimmy Paul worked with TRESemmé this season to create another iconic NYFW runway look. Speaking about the look, Paul said,

“There is a deconstructed element to this collection. In speaking with Jason Wu, I wanted to create a look that felt like the models just emerged from a shipwreck. The TRESemmé products allowed us to achieve a wet, nearly drenched appearance without sacrificing the fluid movement of the natural hair texture.”

The hairstyle is not just about the aquatic allure but also carries undertones of rebellion. It’s reminiscent of punk and gothic motifs, which have been steadily seeping into the fashion scene this season.

The juxtaposition of the delicate, wavy hairstyle with edgier themes creates a fresh and intriguing look.

This bold statement from Jason Wu and Jimmy Paul serves as a reminder of how fashion continually evolves, drawing inspiration from both the past and the unpredictable forces of nature.
