GTL: Jawara’s Iconic NYFW Hair Creations at Helmut Lang SS’24
Stepping into the Helmut Lang SS’24 show at the Skylight at Essex Crossing, the unmistakable vibe of New York City streets pulsated through the venue. The ambiance wasn’t just a product of the clothes or the venue, but significantly, the masterfully crafted hair looks that added layers of depth to the theme.
The legendary hairstylist Jawara, renowned for his avant-garde visions, was the maestro behind these creations. He introduced three standout hairstyles for the event the combed headband look, the spike knot bun, and the slicked-back style.
Drawing inspiration from the Helmut Lang shows of the 90s, Jawara’s vision was both nostalgic and forward-looking. Using exclusively Bumble and Bumble products to sculpt these looks, he seamlessly transported the grungy hair aesthetics of the 90s into today’s fashion landscape.
The end result was a harmonious blend of dirty, greasy, and slick styles, transformed and elevated to achieve an essence that’s undeniably chic and beautiful. His artistry truly captured the gritty, edgy spirit of the 90s and brought it into the modern day.
See below for a step-by-step breakdown of how to achieve each of these creative looks using products you can find at Bumble and Bumble.
The Combed Headband Look
- Start by prepping your hair with Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer and blow-drying the product in using a flat brush to smooth hair.
- Next, section the top half of the hair away from the bottom half. Taking sections from the top of the hair, apply Bb.Gel at the root and comb through.
- Place the comb headband, carefully using it to rake hair backward to create distinct lines at the front of the head.
- Use Surf Spray to style your hair, scrunching it as it is sprayed to create texture.
- Lastly, Brilliantine is used at the ends to create piecey-ness.
The Spiked Knot-Bun
- Start by prepping your hair with Bb.Thickening Spray, blow-drying hair from side to side to create volume.
- Once your hair is completely dry, brush your hair back into a bun at the occipital bone, and generously apply Spray de Mode hairspray.
- Then, secure your hair into a hair tie, twisting hair along to create a knot with some pieces unsecured.
- Use 4-5 bobby pins to secure the bun in place.
- To accentuate and hold the spikes, apply Strong Finish hairspray.
- This look is finished with a fabric band placed at the crown and tied together under the knot-bun.
The Slicked-Back Style
- Start by prepping your hair with Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer.
- Rake your hair backward for a lived-in, undone finish.
- Next, apply Sumotech through your hair to create a hand-tossed look.
- Finish with Thickening Dryspun Texture Spray and a small amount of Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil on the ends.
